Assessment Strategy:  Mathematics Component

·        Homework

o       Assigned/due 2 – 3 times per week

o       Covers both concept and skill questions

o       May be done alone or collaboratively

o       Some discussion in class?

o       May also include in-class group activities

·        Quizzes

o       Given each week except for those with exams or Thanksgiving (~9 total)

o       Timed, in-class, done individually

o       10 – 20 min in length

o       Skill focus

o       Followed immediately by in-class writing quiz (includes reflection on mathematical performance – quiz is still present)

o       Two will be selected by the student for inclusion in the midterm portfolio, and consequently may be revised.  A total of four will be included in the final portfolio.

·        Exams

o       Exams will be taken in class and done individually

o       One 60-min cumulative midterm exam will be given, which will be included in the midterm portfolio, may be revised??

o       One 110-min cumulative final exam will be given and included in the final portfolio

o       Concept focus with some skill testing

·        Excel Labs

o       Focus on developing proficiency organizing, analyzing, and graphing data

o       Will include lessons on basic statistics (averages, 5# summary, regression)

o       Provide a context for further exploration of mathematical concepts

o       Students’ learning will be partially based on their writing portfolio, specifically the demonstration of an ability to incorporate tabular/graphical evidence into a piece of writing

·        Learning Journals

o       While predominantly evaluated by the writing instructor, students will be required to use their journal as a location for mathematical scratchwork and exploration

·        Online Discussion Web

o       Students will be required to post to a class discussion web on a weekly basis

o       Postings must reach beyond basic Q & A to include sharing of student attitudes, experiences, and their learning

·        Portfolios – Students will submit a midterm and a final portfolio

o       Math content of the midterm portfolio:

§         Self-reflection letter

§         Two quizzes

§         Midterm

o       Math content of the final portfolio:

§            Self-reflection letter

§            Four quizzes (including previous two quizzes)

§            Writing project demonstrating ability to use data in context

§            Revised midterm

§            Final exam
